"The mad Shōgun Yoritomo has been assassinated by the Stormdancer Yukiko, and the threat of civil war looms over the Shima Imperium. The toxic blood lotus flower continues to ravage the land, the deadlands splitting wider by the day. The machine-worshippers of the Lotus Guild conspire to renew the nation's broken dynasty and crush the growing rebellion simultaneously--by endorsing a new Shōgun who desires nothing more than to see Yukiko dead"--Dust jacket flap.

Unrelenting darkness, but it's the nature of the series' setting: so much black misery that cries out for a thorough cleansing.
Like a middle child, this second book does seem slightly repetitive in parts.
Still enjoyable reading.

Even though I could've done without the overly-descriptive prose and POV-skipping, the story has some really nice twists and lots of action that gets your heart pumping and your blood racing. The author's done a great job closing up one aspect of the war and opening up another for its finale.

Not too sure what to think of this... firstly, I'll say that it definitely should NOT be in the young adult section.

I guess overall, the story & characters were really interesting; I got pretty into it, really. I'm curious about what'll happen in the next book.

However, the last... maybe third of the book took a decidedly dark turn with some rather graphic scenes that'd be worthy of an 18A rating. It was enough to make me seriously think of putting it down & forgetting about it.

That said, I did finish it, & I begrudgingly will probably read the next book in the series.... *sigh* you know what they say about curiosity killing the cat....I just hope it doesn't stay so dark.
