A misbegotten marriage in the 1960s. In college, Virginia and Buddy were so passionately in love she got pregnant and they had to marry. The story picks them up a year later when, as Virginia puts it, "now that we know each other a little better it turns out we are actually strangers." There is no money, no love and no future, but there is a surprise ending.

I picked this book up after a great read of Ms. Thomas' 2000 autobiography Safekeeping which I gave 5 stars to, and I am glad to know that this was her earlier work from which she improved. The depiction of a young mother caught in a loveless nowhere shotgun marriage with an unfaithful husband was depressing as the marriage was and although it did display some of the author' wit and humor which later showed in Safekeeping it was too dark for me.
