The book is a series of vignettes, which might have been better if the author did not force connections between some of the characters. A little too much goes on and nearly every character has a heavy topic discussed in their short piece of the book: poverty, the death of a child, rape, suicide, etc. It's too much. The book is an easy read, but I was not invested in a single character and felt no true sympathy for any of them. Their struggles weren't real. Claire is one of the characters but she seems to have no greater or less importance than any of the others.
