The prophet Nehemiah has a cousin who can speak several languages, keep complex accounts, write on rolls of parchment and tablets of clay, and solve mysteries. This cousin is catapulted into the center of the Persian court -- working long hours, rubbing elbows with royalty, and completing high-level tasks as a scribe for the queen. Not bad, for a woman living in a man's world.

I absolutely loved this book.
I loved learning about Sarah’s childhood and why she grew up the way that she did.
After loosing her mother at a young age, she looses her faith in God and tries to live her life her way. Being a scribe is all she knows how to be so when she’s thrown into a marriage she didn’t want, she embarrasses herself, believes herself to not be worthy, and is suddenly stuck in a loveless marriage.
In her loneliness and in her pain she’s reminded by God that even though she’s suffering she doesn’t have to be miserable if only she would find her peace in God. After struggling with God, she’s finally able to let go of her anger, her bitterness, her desire to control every aspect of her life, and her lack of faith in The Lord.
I also really loved how the relationship between Sarah and Darius developed and progressed despite their very rocky start.
I do wish that Nehemiah had appeared more in the book but I enjoyed every moment that he did.

I have just discovered Tessa Afshar's books, and I am so thrilled with them! I love how she weaves together historical details and spiritual truth. This story is set in the time of Nehemiah with a likeable heroine who goes from driven and finding her worth in what she does to free in the Lord and connected to those around her.

Deeply engrossing from beginning to end.

A wonderful story by an incredibly talented author. I concur with the reviewer who, speaking of Sarah, wrote, "Her faith journey strengthened mine and will inspire yours."

Harvest of Gold continues the story.

excellent reading, I love how she brings that time period to life and how faith in God is woven in.

Fantastic book. Engaging plot. It did tend to be a bit on the preachy side if one is not accustomed to that, they might not love it, but I thought it was well done

Although I don't like the time period very much the author wrote this book so well I loved every page. Espesily how she wove in Biblical truths so well into the story. A must read!
