Such a beautiful film. All you want is to give these talented kids all the means to be successful, despite the constant budget cuts their school is saddled with. Truly incredible to see kids so fascinated with chess and it immediately made me feel uncool knowing I'd never be able to compete with them! Bravo to the filmmakers, friends and families who make this possible for all students. A must watch!

This is a movie that's gonna make you smile. I love that the school heroes in this documentary aren't sports athletes but instead are a kind of nerdy, chess loving bunch!

A feel-good movie, a charming group of kids and terrific teachers. If you're into this kind of documentary (similar to Word Wars and Wordplay), then this is for you. Heartwarming.

The movie kept me interested throughout. It's a good movie of it's type.

Chess had transformed the "Intermediate School 318" from "school in need of improvement" in 2003, to one of New York City's best. An outstanding inspirational documentary with many lessons and insights to how "underprivileged" students can achieve at highest levels when given the supervisions of dedicated and great teachers, school administrators and parents. The featured students in its chess club were also good students, some gained admission to NYC's top high schools such as Stuyvesant and Brooklyn Tech (students can apply to high schools all over the city * see quote on Stuyvesant's 2.85% admission rate). If you are a parent with K-12 students, take the time to watch it. Here is the blog site of the chess teacher featured in the video: http://lizzyknowsall.blogspot.com/

Stuyvesant is the top specialized High Schools in New York City. Operated by the New York City Department of Education, these schools offer tuition-free accelerated academics to city residents. The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the only way to gain acceptance into one of the Specialized High Schools, of which Stuyvesant traditionally holds the highest cutoff score. In November of their 8th grade, over 28,000 potential incoming freshmen take the 150 minute exam, roughly 800 of whom are accepted.
