The City of Ember is a magical story about two teens who finds their way out of a dark, underground city
In the City of Ember, lived two young teenagers named Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow. Surronding their city is nothing but total darkness. For 200 years, the citizens of the City of Ember lived in a world of amazing lights. But now, the buildings are crumbling, the supplies are decreasing and worst of all- the lights are starting to go out. When Lina finds an old box whos content may save the city from going to utter darkness, she discusses it with Doon. And unfortunately, as the contents of the box were ancient and that Lina's little sister has chewed on it, there are holes in the paper. The papers seem to be instructions for something..... can it be intructions to save their city?

A young girl lives in a city where the lights are turned off at the exact same time every day, and where the generator that powers those lights is breaking down. Surrounding them is nothing but total darkness. Will she be able to save the whole city from living in utter darkness?

Add a Quote“There is so much darkness in Ember, Lina. It's not just outside, it's inside us, too. Everyone has some darkness inside. It's like a hungry creature. It wants and wants and wants with a terrible power. And the more you give it, the bigger and hungrier it gets.”

This has been and always will be one of my favourite books!
I seriously love this book!
I’d known the storyline of Jeanne DuPrau’s The City of Ember from my time working in the children’s department, but on actually reading it I discovered there’s a lot less to it than I imagined.
Lina and Doon are twelve, so they’re assigned jobs in their underground city called Ember, which is all the world anyone knows exists. Lina gets to be a messenger and Doon is working in the Pipeworks. The thing is that the city is undergoing a crisis: they’re running out of supplies and things are breaking down more and more. Doon wants to save the city by figuring out how to fix the generator. Lina keeps dreaming of another city out beyond the darkness. The story follows these two kids dealing with the growing crisis that no one else seems to be handling.
It’s a simple story with much less urgency than you would think. There’s a chewed up message the kids are trying to interpret so they can be the saviours of everyone, but it’s more difficult than they’d first thought. There’s a none-too-subtle environmental message to the story, and kids rebelling against terrible authority, which is always fun. Good book with an easy straight-forward storyline. There are (necessary) sequels.
everybody tells me its amazing i guess ill just haft find out my self i cant wait
In a city where everything was supposed to be forever, the power started flickering. In Ember, a young boy notices that each time, the power outs seem to last longer and longer. The threat of eternal darkness sets in nicely with the introduction of this young boy's journey to find his true identity and purpose. Unsure of who to trust in his rule-breaking, he is on a race against time to solve the city's biggest problem. With the uncovering of secrets, can he find a way to get the citizens of Ember out of the resource-dwindling city?

This book proved to be very inspiring for me and has a very important message about not ever giving up. A girl named Lina switches jobs with another boy to become a messenger on Assignment Day. She reveals some unknown regions and tries to find a way out of the place they live. There are many problems the people in the city of Ember to deal with due to their insufficient light. Lina and her friend go on a miraculous but dangerous adventure and try to save their city from the darkness. Together, there might be a chance for them to find the passage leading out of the city where no one has been able to find before.

This was an extraordinary book. The movie's trailer was awesome and it seemed so exciting to watch. There was a lot of plot and conflict and I really enjoyed that!
