Fink provides a landmark investigation of patient deaths at a New Orleans hospital ravaged by Hurricane Katrina--and a suspenseful portrayal of the quest for truth and justice. After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue. Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths. Fink unspools the mystery of what happened in those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing.

I found myself struggling with the moral questions these doctors and nurses faced, and even in my (comparatively) well rested and nourished state, I still don't know what I would have done. The situations depicted in this book continue to haunt me, but in a very humanizing, humbling way.

Exceedingly long & redundant, but probably necessary to present the views/observations of each person involved. A good primer for disasters, what can happen & discussion about end of life issues. Makes one think of many angles to the event. Reader speaks calmly without imitation of speech, except I take issue with some pronunciations some editor must not have caught. IMO: total collapse by institutions, planning, no preparation in an area prone to this disaster. Exhaustive research & presentation too few will read or heed.

Is six stars possible as a rating for this book? I wish it were. The book is astounding. The research is astounding, the writing is near perfect in pace and tone, and the story is gripping. This is as good as non-fiction gets,
