Curses and Smoke: A Novel of Pompeii by Vicky Alvear Shecter

Lucia is furious with her father. As paterfamilias, head of his Roman household, gladiator-trainer Lucius has chosen her rich husband for her. Lucia fumes to herself that aged, grumpy Vitulus would do very well as a grandfather--but not as her bridegroom! Their loathsome, formal dinner together is cut short by the sounds of a cracking whip and the rumblings of the Earth. (more)

This is a great YA novel about two young people's experiences during the final weeks of Pompeii. I liked it that Tag is a medical slave, something I was unfamiliar with, instead of a typical gladiator (even though he wanted to be one). It made him more interesting. Also, Lucia is a very bright girl and her conjectures about what was happening to the mountain were intriguing. This book is not only about Pompeii - there is a lot of stuff about other things that were going on in the Ancient Roman empire at that time. It is a bittersweet romance as well. I recommend it for teens and adults.

I could not put this book down. The ending was so surprising that my mouth was probably hanging open the entire time. A fantastic read!

This is a really good book but the end is so so so terribly tragically sad. (Don't want to spoil anything ).
