A bundle of laughs.

I really liked Stephen Chow's action comedy kung fun films, "Kung Fu Hustle" and "Shaolin Soccer," but he's been relatively quiet since the success of those films. I don't even remember seeing this come out in the theater. Like his previous films, it mixes high flying kung fu action with Looney Tunes style physical comedy. This embraces more of a fantasy element and is a little too reliant on CGI monsters (Pig demons! Monkey kings! Fish demons!). Chow co-directed and co-wrote, but doesn't star. I enjoyed it, but it's not up to his earlier work. You might also like "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain" and "Green Snake."

I like Stephen Chow films and this one was no exception. I thought it was action packed with some great kung fu. I loved seeing the buddha's hand although this time a bit different. I also thought the special effects were pretty cool too.

It was good, but Stephen Chow may have peaked with "Kung Fu Hustle" - which it would be damn near impossible to top.

For those familiar with "Journey to the West," this is a prequel to how the group came together and why. Stephen Chow brings together his usual perfectionist level of action and comedy, with excellent acting, hilarious mugging, and imaginative special effects and kung fu. Unlike most comedies, and perhaps influenced by Quentin Tarantino, characters do die, often without warning, including some innocent victims. So this may not be suitable for sensitive viewers.
There were some echoes to previous films, such as the astral giant hand of the Buddha and apparently bogus book of mystical secrets from "Kung Fu Hustle." But otherwise, an enjoyable and unpredictable film with engaging characters, especially the young demon hunter, the feisty experienced demon hunter, and the range of other demon hunters that show up at various points to claim demon bounties.

Campy fun !

Great effects and a visit to another culture,..
through their sense of humor.

As one of the actors said, "...this movie will make you feel happier".
