A little bit simplistic in nature but still a solid read. Newly freed slaves on plantation adjust to new situation that seems the same. Supposedly there free but now they have to pay for room and food. Sugar longs to be truly free and is a spunky young girl. She ends up making friends with the plantation owners son and also with the new Chinese men that come to their place.
Sugar is a very compelling read -- I wanted to read it in one sitting. It is also beautifully and poetically told. Somehow she makes the post slavery period assessible even for 4th - 6th graders. Perhaps due to that, the climax is less climactic than it could be and the denouement a bit swift and simple. The joy of learning about new cultures and the brief hope of working well together is conveyed so warmly -- this is a book to savor.
