I love DS Aector McAvoy and his supervisor Detective Superintendent Trish Pharaoh. I thought the story framework was very interesting and his writing talent is terrific. But by the conclusion I was a little disappointed in how all the pieces parts fit together. My problem could have been due to the way I read, in 30-60 minute segments.

A promising start that never delivers. The type of pop mystery novel that you read on a plane/train and leave behind and never think about it again.

What starts as an interesting and realistic set of characters soon turn out to be caricatures of the author's obsession for body image and physical characteristics over any mental capabilities. This defines and influences his characters leading to unrealistic interactions between them.

Ending is a mishmash of manipulative thriller clichès - rain, phones that stop working, drug- induced evil vs helpless innocence, detectives struggling to arrive at conclusions that the readers have already been told by the narrator - just to create drama. It gets worse when the mystery is uncovered, not by the characters, but described by the narrator.

The ending leaves some loose ends presumably for the next novel in the series like a season finale. Unfortunately, this novel does nothing to make readers eager to read the next one.

this got a stunningly good review in Booklist. Thriller and mystery writers will want to read this title.

"Already awash in violent crime investigations due to a sadistic new drug lord, DS Aector McAvoy and Detective Superintendent Trish Pharaoh must also hunt down a serial killer, in this new novel in the series following Original Skin."
