We've found an Earthlike planet, but what secrets does it hold?

In Ben Bova's New Earth , The world is thrilled by the discovery of an Earthlike planet. Advance imaging shows oceans of liquid water and a breathable, oxygen-rich atmosphere. A human exploration team is dispatched to explore the planet, now nicknamed New Earth. The explorers understand they're on a one-way mission. The trip takes eighty years one way, so even if they are able to return to Earth, nearly two hundred years will have passed. Their friends and family will be gone. The explorers are not the best available: they are expendable. Upon landing on the planet they find a group of intelligent creatures who look like humans. Are they native to this world or invaders? Moreover, the scientists begin to realize that the planet cannot be natural. Rather, could New Earth be an artifact?

Solid if plodding book.

Easy to read and Mr. Bova knows how to keep the reader's curiosity up. Quite a few standard science fiction elements are used. Character development was a bit weak for me. While it was expected the characters would all react differently as the various plot elements unfolded, their reactions seemed too simple at times, lacking depth. The romance element seemed a bit too rushed, almost superficial but perhaps the aliens wanted to influence the humans by any means possible. There will likely be two or three sequels to this novel.

Jordan Kell and his team of scientists are sent on a mission to explore the planet Sirius C. The book was interesting enough to keep me reading through the story. I found some of the other characters pretty amusing, especially Meek. I also have some complaints. Some chapters are "fillers"(chapters that don't advance the story line whatsoever). An example is the romance between Jordan and Aditi. There was too much lovey dovey space opera between them. And it wasn't even GOOD space opera. I also found the ending to be somewhat disappointing. Nevertheless, it's a great book. If you're new to the Sci Fi genre and/or don't want to read a Sci Fi book that has to do with war/plague/invasion/etc then this is the book for you.
