Inspector Maigret relishes the challenge of solving any mystery. Filled with dangerous crimes and elusive characters from the villages of rural France to the alleyways of Montmarte. I watched the first one and was so put off by the pure British-ness of it (gestures, especially) that I nearly didn't continue with the rest. Decided not to quibble but just watch, and found that I could like the stories by just accepting Gambon rather than criticizing him for not being French. Because all of the stories in this series are also done by Cremer in the French series, I found it interesting to compare how they differed. Always there were significant variations in the plot, including who got killed, or who did the killing, who was there, etc. And since I have not read the stories as Simenon wrote them I don't know which versions were more to the original. In the end, this English set just has to be enjoyed, or not, on its own, as does the French version.

Well done!!
Although I prefer a foreign series to be in the native tongue, and have watched several episodes of the French version of Maigret starring the late, wonderful actor, Bruno Cremer, I was pleasantly surprised that I thoroughly enjoyed this British production. Michael Gambon is excellent in the role.
