A really good early 1960's movie.

Well - As this film's story goes - Believing whole-heartedly in the saying "Honor Thy Mother and Thy Father", Deanie Loomis follows her mother's advice to resist her desire for sex with her boyfriend, Bud Stamper, the son of one of the most prosperous families in town.

Bud, in turn, reluctantly follows the advice of his loud and dominating father, Ace, who openly suggests that he find himself "another-kind-of-woman" to satisfy his desires.

This whole traumatic episode of denial triggers a profound emotional breakdown for both of these 2 young people, especially for the fragile Deanie, who, driven close to madness, is eventually institutionalized.

Yes. 1961's Splendor In The Grass may seem quite old-fashioned by today;s loose standards. But, still, I, personally, recommend this picture. Its compelling story-line, as well as its well-drawn characters and superb direction are all nothing short of first-rate, from start to finish.

love WB & NW but not this movie. Guess it just doesn't translate to modern times, not the greatest script or acting. Direction is weak too. Disappointing, as I really like the stuff Beatty did in the 70's.
Also what's with the cover art? Nothing to do with the movie! Looks like Ann Margrett. Put up the old cover art from the movie to give people an idea of what they are going to see, an old weak movie.

Released in 1961 - Splendor In The Grass is a heart-wrenching, emotionally-charged, teen, tear-jerker that stars Natalie Wood and introduces Warren Beatty (24 at the time) in his first starring role._____ This is a very effective and almost flawlessly acted story of the intense sexual awakening of two "very-much-in-love" young adults living in a small-minded, straight-laced, Kansas town in the late 1920s._____ Splendor In The Grass is a highly-recommended picture. Its compelling story, as well as its well-drawn characters and superb direction are all nothing short of first-rate, from start to finish._____ Filmed in lush Technicolor, Splendor In The Grass was directed by Elia Kazan whose other notable films include - A Streetcar Named Desire, On The Waterfront, and East Of Eden. At the 34th Academy Awards presentations a well-deserved Oscar for "Best Screenplay" went to William Inge.

a lot of obnoxious people from the '50s, pretending they're in the '20s, dealing inexpertly with teenage female sexuality, not much to learn here

Deanie and Bud are in love and want to be together in every way. But in 1920's rural Kansas, they feel compelled to follow the mores of the time as well as their parent's advice and abstain. What happens next leads to Bud's physical collapse and Deanie's mental issues. Almost too full of despair to watch, the ending is perfectly executed and faithful to the tone of the story.

One of my favorite guy friends suggested this one to me. He said: "Natalie Wood is just a peach in Splendor in the Grass." True. And Warren Beatty is in good form, too ;)
