Every mammal is born into this world weak, small, and dependant on their mother of family to survive. Meerkat mobs will share in the responsibility of caring for the young, while grizzly bear cubs won't be weened for a few years. This book is full of such facts, so to make it easier to follow it is split into sections like eating, protection, and learning. A short statement follows each double-spread cover page to explain the content, then proceeds to give several examples using various animals. Adorable pencil and watercolour creations will have you cooing in delight. These, partnered with the text, provide amble opportunities for discussing the similarities and differences in child-rearing. To tie it all together, the author ends by including us. The tone of the book is a sweet and joyful expression of early life, and while it does mention the dangers for babies, it does not go into great detail, nor does it show it. Quite a bit of additional information about the animals included, as well as resources, is included in the back. Born in the Wild is a great introduction to the birth through toddler years of baby animals for young children.
