Based on Stevenson's travels with a stubborn donkey named Modestine through south central France, this entertaining narrative is one of the best travelogues of the nineteenth-century. Stevenson offers many keen observations about France, the people, and the dramatic history of the region, as well as thoughtful insights about the religious strife between the Catholics and Protestants.

I met some Scotish folk this summer who were travelling in Stevenson's footsteps, minus the donkey. Good read, charming for the details of 19th century travel on foot with a donkey through France.

A low-key, almost self-deprecating little travel story, written quite early in his career before Stevenson becme well known. Plenty of local color, a bit of gentle humor. An easy fireside read but somewhat dated by now.

This book is full of wit and wry humor and a quick read. Backpacking must have been a very unusual avocation at the time, judging by the responses of the various villagers he encounters. I enjoyed the extensive use of colorful, archaic vocabulary and his romantic reflections on travel and camping out under the stars. He also includes some interesting historical background about this region of France.

A delightful read about his 1879 journey along the road to Santiago with his donkey, Modestine. This book must have inspired others to follow in his footsteps.
