Copied from "May I Bring a Friend":
I realized that, if I go through the Caldecott Award Winners, I will find the myriad of books I read in my elementary school years - whether they were assigned, or reading circles, or just books that I checked out from the library. It doesn't matter - I can remember the cover and I have rediscovered so many books - and so many that I didn't know were even around when my mother was an elementary school student! What a great surprise! This has been fantastic, and a great trip down memory lane.

Ridiculous story that I thoroughly disapprove of. In a survival situation, some can just sit around and make art, and then when everyone is starving, that art will lift everyones spirits. Entertainment and art have their place, but it's still important for everyone to pull their weight.

When the mice’s food supplies dwindle away during winter, everything becomes a memory. Frederick uses his endless store of supplies – the sunrays, the colour, and the words – to warm the hearts of his fellow field mice and feed their spirits during the coldest, darkest days of winter.
