Inspired by the 1987 true story, the movie follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California's farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White, a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. With grit and determination, the unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.

It didn't feel like a Disney film because the long bumpy road to the championship or that the coach admitted he make mistakes.
Loved the scene on tough ex-football coach laid low by picking fruits & vegetables for few hours.
The ending was inspiring.

Kinney has no new materiel in this one (just like the last 5) very repetitive and annoying. :(

Great message, however, Disney makes life seem like that REM song, Shiny Happy People Holding Hands. A tad irksome 😃😃😃

True stories make the best movies. Good depiction of pickers' lives. But casting two chubby actors as cross-country runners? C'mon. The real-life characters looked pretty skinny in the archival photo at the end.

After being fired from his job as coach in Boise, Idaho, coach Jim White moves his family of four across the country to McFarland California. He works as the life science teacher, PE coach, and assistant football coach. He decides to start a cross-country team, after noticing the keen running skill in most of the students. It also gives insight on the lives of the students and their work as "pickers". It is a wonderful tribute to the original team and their town, McFarland.

White's prep talk:
They haven't got what you've got. They don't get up at dawn like you and go to work in the fields. They don't go to school all day and then go back to those same fields. That's what you do. And then you come out with me and you run eight miles, 10 miles and you take on even more pain. These kids don't do what you do. They can't even imagine it. I want you to look around. Best in the state, right? Every team that's here deserves to be, including you. But they haven't got what you got. All right? They don't get up at dawn like you and go to work in the fields. Right? … that day with you Diaz kids, I'll be honest with you, it was a... It was the worst day's work I ever had to do in my life. And I said to myself, "Whatever kind of crappy job I end up in, "it'll never be as tough as that." You kids do it every day. And your parents hope they can do it every day, and they'll do it for a lifetime if it means a better life for you.
