Meet teenage Cleopatra in this first-person account of history that captures "sibling rivalry at its most vicious" ( Publishers Weekly ).

It is the first century B.C., an ancient time of everpresent drama and danger. Cleopatra, the third of the pharaoh's six children, is whom her father has chosen to be the next queen of Egypt. But when King Ptolemy is forced into exile, Cleopatra is left alone to fend for herself in a palace rife with intrigue and murder. Smart, courageous, ambitious, and sensuously beautiful, Cleopatra possesses the charm to cause two of history's most famous leaders to fall in love with her. But as her cruel sisters plot to steal the throne, Cleopatra realizes there is only one person on whom she can rely--herself.
The tale of her teenage years is a story of power and romance that stands the test of time--centuries later, Cleopatra remains a figure of mystery and intrigue. Now, award-winning author Carolyn Meyer mesmerizes readers with revelations in this novel about one of the greatest women who ever lived.

I really like Cleopatra and this book was an awesome historical fiction about her childhood/teen years. I would also recommend Cleopatra's Moon by Vicky Alvear Shector which is about Cleopatra's daughter, Cleopatra Selene.

I think this book would be good if you wanted to just learn about Cleopatra's childhood. This book talks about her childhood for about 3/4 of the book then crams the rest of her life in the very end of the book. other than that I loved it. The way the author explained was pretty impressive.

i loved this book. I have read it twice. might read it a third time.

This really is young adult fiction, nevertheless an interesting review of life in Egypt, dysfunctional families in dysfunctional monarchies making self interested decisions leading to murder of siblings and spouses. Cleopatra is well portrayed as a bright girl with limited worldly experience having to learn quickly how to save herself [who is the embodiment of the kingdom]. We are not clear how much good she did for her citizens, the focus of the book is on her relationships. An who knew the court dancers went naked except for their long braids when they danced.

I read this book in one day and really enjoyed it. I've always liked Carolyn Meyer's books because I am a fan of historical fiction, and I feel she writes them in an interesting way for teens (and adults). This Cleopatra story is interesting, fun, somewhat romantic, and definitely pulls you into the Ancient Egyptian world.

A lovely read that combined great Egyptian history with a little fantasy and romance. I'll definitely be looking out for this author from now on.

This book follows the few facts we know today about Cleopatra amazingly well. I'm reading a Cleopatra biography and keep thinking about this book and how awesome Carolyn Meyer's books are.
