Now in paperback, a moving novel of loss and resilience, told in a voice that is "sometimes humorous, at times heartbreaking, and always authentic" ( School Library Journal ).

Twelve-year-old May lives with her grandmother, who is depressed about the absence of May's mother, and her father, who works long hours and is almost never around. Due to her circumstance and her resentment over having to live in a low-income neighborhood, May often finds herself picking fights and getting into trouble.

But when May is caught defacing her least favorite teacher's classroom, she has a choice: expulsion or one-on-one summer school with the teacher she most detests. Begrudgingly, May chooses summer school and ultimately learns that her teacher has a secret past--and might just hold the key to answers no one else will give May about her mother.

The healing benefit of forgiveness is the message of this contemporary story of May (Maeve) O’Toole and the summer following her disastrous eighth grade year. Angry after the loss of her mother, and the seeming abandonment by her dad and grandmother, May acts out in school and loses friends and freedom as she is “sentenced” to summer school with her least favorite teacher, a woman May calls “Movado the Avocado”.
The time May spends with this teacher allows her to grow, to learn more about herself and her situation, and to reach a closure which frees her from the anger which has dominated her actions. May almost loses her only friend, Olive, but repairs that relationship in time to let Olive rescue her from more destructive behavior.
This is a quick read with short chapters. Galante has drawn several characters worth caring about.
