Opinion

From Library Staff

Melville had read about the wrecking of the Essex by a whale and used it in Moby Dick. But not the whole story: this is the full story of the wreck and aftermath.

After their ship is rammed and sunk by an 80 ton whale, the men of the Essex spend 90 days aboard 3 small rowboats with only eight men surviving.
