It is a good stand alone book due to the background references, but is much better if you have read the first one, well first. The tone is set by that one, and you still care about the characters in this one even though Ben is pushed more to the back burner. Can't say anymore because I don't want to blow the ending, but it's worth it, and a good bridge between book one and three.

In my random way I find I read series works sometimes from the middle or the last work back. This reveals interesting story development perspective. Completely enjoyable for the truly random readers out there... . Great work, on to book #1
