Add a CommentI started reading this series because author Dervla McTiernan posted about being excited to read the newest book; I love her writing so wanted to know what she liked. I almost stopped early on because it seemed a bit light on heart and depth, but as soon as I found out about Flynn's daughter I was hooked. It's definitely a lighter crime read in that the main character is a fast-talking flippant (seeming) conartist-turned-lawyer, and it has that private eye kinda vibe, but it's good pacing and I was definitely left wanting to follow Flynn's story.
The second time I've read an Eddie Flynn book. This time the Russian Mob have his daughter & Eddie has to defend the leader & also set up a bomb inside the court. Eddie was once a con man so he is able to use a few tricks that help him.
Fast paced, very exciting with many twists & turns to keep you turning pages when you really should be going to sleep.
This novel becomes more intense and the suspense is heightened as the story enfolds. The book is written by a Belfast lawyer so the courtroom drama and questioning of witnesses is where Cavanagh's expertise shows. Eddie Flynn, the main character, is a likable NYC lawyer for the defense. In this novel he uses a lot of pick pocket tricks to get the results he needs to be one step ahead of his client who is threatening him and his 10 year old daughter. There is plenty of action outside the courtroom as well. Cavanagh has written several books with Eddie Flynn as his main character. Each novel presents a different plot with the author providing background information repeat characters as needed so each can be read as a stand alone. Cavanagh's novels have won awards. His novels are great reads for the beach or poolside
Not my usual thing...but the third book in this series was recently released and somehow landed on my radar. This is a fast-paced court room drama featuring a hard-scrabble attorney trying to save his daughter. Thematically it has more ties to films like Taken and Ransom...and will definitely appeal to readers who like their novels fast-paced and full of action.
When we first meet Eddie Flynn he is being held at gunpoint. His assailant instructs Flynn to put on his coat -- and it now has a bomb inside. . .And this taut thrill ride continues through the entire novel with many twists and turns. One of the scenes that captivated my imagination was Flynn's ride on the back of a Kawasaki Ninja 650 through lower Manhattan during morning rush hour. The primary motivation for Flynn is saving his 10-year-old daughter Amy from the clutches of the Russian mob. It will take every last trick and resource he has to get her back. His tool chest includes calling on a boyhood friend who is a boss in the Italian mafia and the judge who turned him from being a con man into a lawyer. Flynn will need both those skill sets to survive and save Amy. Fans of John Grisham and "The Lincoln Lawyer" will want to check out this series.
Good lord.
Kept me holding my breath & on the edge of my seat. Every time I relaxed the least little bit, there was another reason to hold my breath and keep reading.
Could not believe this was his first book - it's excellent!
I must have like this book, as I started reading it at bedtime... and finished in one sitting (or laying.) quirky characters and menacing bad guys, bullets spraying, an interesting combination of grifter/lawyer, it was an adventure.
Needed an easy, fast-paced book after slogging my way thru a 600 page book that I didn't really like. This one fit the bill. I liked the con-man/lawyer character idea for Eddie. A lot of the book is far-fetched, but it was an entertaining, early John Grisham type read. Good if you are looking for a quick thriller.
