Margaret Maron's New York Times bestselling mystery series featuring Judge Deborah Knott comes to a heartwarming conclusion... LONG UPON THE LAND On a quiet August morning, Judge Deborah Knott's father, Kezzie, discovers a dead body on his farm. Investigating the crime, Deborah's husband, Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Bryant, soon uncovers a long-simmering hostility between Kezzie and the slain man over a land dispute, casting suspicion on the Knott family. Meanwhile, Deborah receives a cigarette lighter that once belonged to her mother, which makes her curious about her parents. How did they meet? And how could a prominent attorney's daughter marry the uneducated son of a moonshiner? Why are Deborah's brothers so evasive about the dead man? Is the murder linked to Kezzie's illegal whiskey business? And could his courtship of Deborah's mother have something to do with the bad blood between the two families? Deborah's loyalties are torn as she tries to clear her family from suspicion without hampering Dwight's investigation.

Being a past resident of North Carolina has enhanced my enjoyment of this series, but this book was particularly enjoyable. The characters are believable, the life circumstances are believable and the plots are readable. I will miss these characters - but who knows, Deborah may turn up in New York? Hope so.

Excellent book! Well-written and a great cast of characters. I enjoyed the way she had two related story lines occurring at different points in time. Highly recommend this book.

I loved this book! I have loved this whole series, but this book is especially good. Please say it is not the last!

The two themes of this book--the story of Deborah Knott's parents' courtship and the murder of a problematic neighbor--keep us moving back and forth between the heartwarming background story and the violent death that must be solved. Both are puzzles of a different kind and so keep us guessing until the end. Both puzzles come to surprising solutions. Great book. I hope it's not the last.

Since this is the last Deborah Knott book, this was a bittersweet read. I loved the flashbacks into Kezzie and Sue's courtship. I wished I got even more of their story! Definitely a good final book.
