This graphic biography of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) captures the prolific and eventful life of one of the world's best-loved artists. Pablo explores Picasso's early life among the bohemians of Montmartre, his turbulent relationship with artist/model Fernande Olivier, and how his art developed through friendships with poets Max Jacob and Guillaume Apollinaire, the painter Georges Braque, and his great rival Henri Matisse.

One of my least favourite artists featured in one of my favourite graphic novels of this year (so far). This story is told from the point of view of Fernande, Picasso’s lover; and, is a light survey of his artistic development from youth until the eventual creation of cubism. The full-colour artwork in this comic really gives off the feel of early 20th century France; restrained yet… seedy. And you have to respect the artists when they ignore their computers for their paint brushes and pens. Especially when it works out this well -- Gorgeous artwork! I highly recommended this title.

At the Bateau-Lavoir, awakenings could be a bit rude.
