William Manchester is a great writer but much of this book is overwrought. It is so meticulously detailed that it becomes painstaking to read at times, there are so many different politicians, titles and characters to keep up with that it all becomes a blur. Unless you were alive during this time and already familiar with the multitude of people written about within, you will struggle to keep track of the names - which is incredibly frustrating.

I also think Manchester focused too much on very minor, unimportant details and went off on tangents discussing political issues that did not pertain to Kennedy and his death. It feels more like an overview of the political scene in general rather than explicitly about the President's death.

Should have been trimmed by at least 200 pages, but overall, I'm glad I stuck with it.
