"October, 1944. It has been a challenging season for Elderberry's favorite first grade teacher, Miss Dimple Kilpatrick. A beloved former student was recently killed in the war, her brother has become distant, and her friend Odessa, the cook at Pheobe's rooming house, has taken a leave of absence to care for a relative. Still, when Dimple's librarian friend, Virginia, finds a young woman, Dora, on the library porch looking for a place to spend the night, soft-hearted Dimple brings her back to Phoebe's and offers her food and a warm coat. But when Dimple is trying to find her a place to sleep, the young girl disappears. The next morning, Miss Dimple answers a knock on the door expecting it to be the girl. Instead, she is greeted by greeted by a somewhat disheveled young woman with lustrous hair and a sunrise of a smile who claims she has been assigned to fill in at the house. Augusta Goodnight, a guardian angel who has been summoned from a well-deserved rest after a series of troublesome earthly duties, has taken up at Phoebe's. When Dora is discovered dead-- murdered-- the real reason for Augusta's 'assignment' becomes clear, at least to Augusta. Reluctantly, Miss Dimple teams up with Augusta to find out who the killer is"-- Provided by publisher.

Love Augusta Goodnight and Miss Dimple series so when both were combined it was perfect. You definitely need to know the characters for this book to make sense so get caught up! You will be glad.

I am an avid reader of cozy mysteries, and I had a very difficult time plodding through this book. In fact, the only thing that kept me engaged was the title and my hopes that something uplifting would eventually occur, which is why I kept the book an extra 8 days and paid a late fee. Although I'm happy that the library will be able to use the fees from my fine to put towards the purchase of more books, this particular book was not worth keeping and paying fines. The minuscule amount of character development felt haphazard and disjointed, the mystery was weak, and there never was an event that I'd classify as uplifting. I enjoy a bit of "magic" in a story, but some of the magic that was in this book seemed to be placed there for absolutely no reason. The only thing I felt was redeeming about this book was the author's window into life during that wartime period. This was the 1st book I've read by this author and have no desire to read another. That being said, this book was given consistently high ratings on Amazon, so maybe those who have been reading the series and already know the characters, will find this one enjoyable.
