The first book in Turner's incredible Queen's Thief series, if you haven't read "The Thief" yet it is definitely time to pick it up! Fast-paced and compelling, in "The Thief" Turner creates an engaging fantasy world and a rich mythology that drives the plot forward. Her fascinating, witty characters will keep you guessing up until the last surprising page and will make you immediately reach for the next book in the series.

That was fun.

I knew there was more to Gen but I didn't expect the story to do a 180 flip like that. I was pleasantly surprised.

A fun, intriguing teen fantasy. Gen is delightful, funny, cynical, and genuine - and a trickster. This is the first in a series that only gets better. Very entertaining, well-written, and highly recommended.

In a fantasy world that resembles the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean, the young thief Gen is pulled from a dungeon and ordered by a king to steal a jewel of great value from a rival kingdom or face certain death. If you have a fondness for tricksters, exciting adventure, and very clever writing, you will love this book. Gen is one of my all-time favorite characters and I take a great deal of pleasure re-reading this book to spot the clues that lead to the surprise ending. It's the first of 3 books set in the same world, and they're all excellent.

Superb! What I wouldn't give to be able to read it for the first time again. Turner is one of the few writers who gets every single word right.

Definitely a worthwhile read. I love Gen, and the decision to narrate the story from his point of view was pure genius! I admit I was a little confused at the end; maybe everything just happened too quickly for me. But still it's an amazing book that I've added to my top ten favorite books ever.

I had great expectations: I enjoyed the book, but I'm not running out to buy my own copy. It reminds me of fantasy/adventure books I read as a child, with no expectation of formula or genre, and they always tended to end in the middle too. I will read further in the series.

From the website of Megan Whalen Turner:

The most powerful advisor to the King of Sounis is the magus. He's not a wizard, he's a scholar, an aging solider, not a thief. When he needs something stolen, he pulls a young thief from the King's prison to do the job for him.

Gen is a thief and proud of it. When his bragging lands him behind bars he has one chance to win his freedom-- journey to a neighboring kingdom with the magus, find a legendary stone called Hamiathes's Gift and steal it.

The magus has plans for his King and his country. Gen has plans of his own.
