Amiably engrossing satire on the 'win ethic' that offers a take-it-or-leave-it approach to its serious points about enforcing precociousness on kids, but consistently delights with its panoramic comic invention.
The success this underdog comedy from director Michael Ritchie almost single-handedly spawned the kids' sports film boom of the 1980s and '90s.

Fun entertaining story. I enjoyed it as a kid, and watching it again with my 9 and 11 year old boys. The movie is rated PG, but note it contains foul language, racial slurs, and lots of beer. I guess that stuff wasn't as offensive in the 70's!

I liked Matthau in this movie and the characters are likeable.

A timeless film about kids, coaches, and little league baseball. This film presented a risk at the time it was made. Under less skilled hands, it might have turned out pretty bad. To be believable, it required an A+ acting job for the part of Coach Buttermaker. And Mr. Matthau delivered. In spades. His is a tour de force performance and is the primary reason to see this film. Very much recommended.

Bad News Bears was released in 1976 and makes fun of the relationship between the coaches. the players and the parents. Walter Matthau stands out in an all star performance as a beer drinking coach named his last name Buttlermaker. The kids are what make or break any film with this many kids in the film. Here they are outstanding in their roles. Tatum O'Neal play the Bad News Bears Pitcher and she comes off a winner. Victor Morrow plays the opposing win at any cost opposing coach convincingly. For family fun, sit down with the Bad News Bears. They are a delightful group and they learn several great lessons in life along the way!

Great movie!!!! This movie really shows how hard work pays off.

I generally don't like sports movies and especially don't like the inspiring lovable losers make good subplot, but this was surprisingly funny. It helps that Matthau plays a misanthropic, cigar chomping drunk and that the kids have foul mouths. This is not really a kids movie, by the way. And it avoids a totally cheesy ending, which is not small feat. Look for a young Jackie Earle Haley as one of the players. Michael Ritchie would also direct "Fletch," "The Candidate" and "Downhill Racer."

Veepea--Because real life is like that sometimes. Sorry if you'd rather have a nice, sweet, hunky-dory fake-type character. This is a guy who cares, but he's kind of crusty; still, he has the fortitude to push the kids into becoming a real team & even finds 2 great ringers.

I don't see what the fuss is about this film, he's grumpy and doesn't like kids and is mean- how is that a great story?
