I really enjoyed this book. Elka is a strong individual who is raised by a man she calls Trapper. He found her when she was 7 and teachers all the skills to survive in the wilderness. After 10 years she finds out he is wanted for murder. As she runs away trying to escape from him and the law, she gets in very dangerous situations. She wants to find her parents who left her with Nana 15 years ago to dig for gold.

I really liked Elka and was cheering for her to find her parents and to get away from Trapper. I liked Penelope, a girl she rescues and becomes best friends and family to one another. Their stories backgrounds are slowly revealed and you realize that everyone is a little messed up in the apocalyptic story. Sometimes I forgot this was in the future because everyone is thrown back to 150 years ago after a big bombing by the Russians. I did wonder why they would be panning for gold though, I would think a lot of that was already found. This is a beautifully written story and well worth the time.

Not just wilderness survival, but a deep horror of the evils that lurk deep in humanity. From the post-apocalyptic setting to the hunting lifestyle, Lewis evokes the pure willpower needed to overcome evil and the sheer cruelty of nature. She casts this against the beauty of civilization and friendship. Will her female protagonist, Elka, overcome her fears and inner turmoil to grow into a woman that can make the right choices? Plenty of western-style showdowns and Revenant-style bear chases. If you liked The Road, you'll like this novel.

I really, really enjoyed this book. Even though it is post apocalyptic, the setting is more like the old west. This book is outdoor adventure, cat and mouse suspense, and family drama all rolled up together. I enjoy a strong, young protagonist so Elka grabbed me from page one. Loved her fierce spirit, strong independence, and mouth of a sailor. Her dialect made me think of Appalachian hill people and made her more endearing to me, but some readers may not like it. Great first book by this author.
(Word of caution to more sensitive readers - there are some grisly subject matter and foul language in this book.)
