As usual, Victoria Holt's books are so, so good. She actually took time to tell the whole story. There are no sudden endings.

'The Shivering Sands' was a bit sad in places but the plot was good, mostly believable and a real mystery. I didn't guess the 'bad guy', which I usually do. I thought it was a different character. It kept moving; I didn't want to put it down.

After personal loss, Caroline becomes a music teacher for a wealthy family's 3 girls. She takes the position 'incognito' because her sister, a very practical archeologist who was digging on the edge of the estate, has suddenly disappeared.

The family is also haunted by tragedies from the past and before Caroline can unravel the mystery about her sister, there is another disappearance. She is falling for the heir but is he the cause of the disappearances? His father thinks so. And who is causing the mysterious lights in the burned chapel? And what about the crazy aunt to paints people's portraits as she 'sees' them? How can people disappear without a trace?
