"When a teenage joyrider crashes a stolen car and ends up in a coma, a routine DNA test reveals a connection to an unsolved murder from twenty-two years before. It's a cold case that should be straightforward. But it's as twisted as the DNA helix itself. Meanwhile, Karen is mired in grief and guilt after the death of her partner. She finds herself irresistibly drawn to another mystery that she has no business investigating, a mystery that has its roots in a terrorist bombing two decades ago. Karen's intuition is telling her something doesn't add up. But is she onto something? Or has she, as her boss has been anticipating, gone too far this time?"-- Book jacket.

From Library Staff

Scottish author Val McDermid writes another intricately written cold case novel, featuring Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pirie. The first book in this series is The Distant Echo.
Her Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series was the basis for the TV show Wire in the Blood.

Out of Bounds (A Karen Pirie novel) by Val McDermid. This is a Scottish police procedural, the 30th novel from one of my favourite authors. McDermid has three series, including the one that became the TV series The Wire in the Blood. I highly recommend her books, and Out of Bounds in particular. Character development, relationships, setting, politics, and plot, all so satisfying. Thank goodness for McDermid's 'addiction to words.'

Val McDermid is a really, really good writer. I've read most of her books including another Karen Pirie book. This book is just a big disappointment. Horrible.

First book I have read by this author. I really liked it. I liked the cold case aspect. I liked the forensics and detective work. I liked the characters and look forward to reading the other books in this series.

This is the first Val McDermid book I’ve read. I look forward to reading more books with Scottish Detective Karen Pirie as the main character. I love books with multi-dimensional characters and they abound in this book.

Not a perfect mystery, but close. Delicious writing. Mostly unexpected twists and turns in plot. Humanist themes.

And, last but not least—satisfying, intelligent and well-modulated humor.

A really well thought-ought story-line where everything is closely interwoven and must be unravelled, thread by thread..Val McDermid can be relied on to explore all the ramifications of interpersonal relationships.Much enjoyed
