"Winifred Allen needs a vacation. Stifled by a soul-crushing job, devastated by the death of her beloved brother, and lonely after the end of a fifteen-year marriage, Wini is feeling vulnerable. So when her three best friends insist on a high-octane getaway for their annual girls' trip, she signs on, despite her misgivings. What starts out as an invigorating hiking and rafting excursion in the remote Allagash Wilderness soon becomes an all-too-real nightmare: A freak accident leaves the women stranded, separating them from their raft and everything they need to survive. When night descends, a fire on the mountainside lures them to a ramshackle camp that appears to be their lifeline. But as Wini and her friends grasp the true intent of their supposed saviors, long buried secrets emerge and lifelong allegiances are put to the test. To survive, Wini must reach beyond the world she knows to harness an inner strength she never knew she possessed. With intimately observed characters, visceral prose, and pacing as ruthless as the river itself, The River at Night is a dark exploration of creatures--both friend and foe--that you won't soon forget"-- Provided by publisher.

Easy to read book, however, it's very predictable. As I read it I was constantly reminded of the movie "Deliverance" except instead of 4 men on a canoe trip in the middle of nowhere, the book has 4 women in the same situation. Maybe because I've seen "Deliverance", I felt this book was completely unoriginal and too predictable.

Thriller about an outdoor adventure that becomes a nightmare for four unsuspecting woman trying to "find themselves". Started off really well then veer off into a unrealistic plot line. Very disappointed in plot line and characters.

Contrary to some of the other comments, I found this book to be a real page turner once it got going. Sure there were some this and thats, and oh how convenient things, but overall I give it a thumbs up.

By page 30. I was already annoyed by how inaccurately the protagonist's career was portrayed (I'm in the same industry). By page 75, I found every character either thoroughly unlikeable or uninteresting. Halfway through, the overwhelmingly unrealistic plot devices made me want to scream and then stop. But like a masochist, I made myself finish it. This book was shite.

This would be a good summer read. Moves fast.

Wonderfully fast paced, with a fantastic main character in Wini. Too bad the plot can't decide if it wants to DELIVERANCE or not; the boom would have been stronger had it kept its focus on the four women at its core.

I was looking forward to this book as it combines 2 of my favorite genres - outdoor adventure and survival. The beginning of this book was like a YA book of high school girls and I was a little disappointed. But after the rafting accident, it got a little better. Didn't have the intense feeling of fear and danger or depth of story that I was expecting, but it was entertaining. I read it in a day, so there was apparently enough content to keep my interest.
