What a beautifully told and illustrated story about a real man, who was a slave, bought and sold with the cave. Stephen Bishop's spirit transcended his circumstances. This book illustrates the curiosity and wonder that made Bishop a great guide and naturalist.
Recommend to everyone and anyone.

It's very hard to find a story about African Americans that does not include slavery or abuse. This came close as the man Stephen had a job and was a successful guide even though a slave. I wanted to find a story that had a plot with characters who were free so I could retell it to elementary age kids during Black History month. I found about 2 - too bad there are not more.
