The illustrations are gorgeous oil paintings and cut paper collages. I thought that the illustrations supported the text really wonderfully, and the text painted a clear picture and understanding of the time. The reason that this picture book got 4 stars from me and not 5 stars is that there is a lot in the text that requires background information of the reader that the text doesn't go into detail about. It gives a broad overview of Lena Horne's life.
