When Miss Norma was diagnosed with uterine cancer, she decided not to confine herself to a hospital bed for what could be her last stay. At ninety years old she took off on a cross-country journey with three professional nomads: her retired son Tim, his wife Ramie, and their standard poodle Ringo. In their thirty-six-foot RV this once timid woman said 'yes' to living in the face of death, found her health improving, and strengthened bonds with her family and with strangers who welcomed them with kindness and open hearts.

There are many important moments in Driving Miss Norma that everyone could benefit from. From talking about end-of-life care, the importance of saying "yes," and taking the time to talk to get to know each other, Driving Miss Norma encompasses the importance of living. While anyone can enjoy this book, I would recommend it to anyone struggling with grief as this book may give you a new perspective.

At first glance, I thought the book might be too sentimental for my tastes, but I ended up loving it and its message. A book the authors reference as one that helped shape their thoughts and feelings about end of life issues, and one I think everyone should read is Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. If you like the humor and playfulness of Driving Miss Norma, another multigenerational road trip story that reminded me of Miss Norma’s adventures is The Ride of Our Lives by Mike Leonard.
