A superb earthy, dazzling, highly involving version of Bizet's classic opera, as depicted through the eyes and neorealistic vision of Italian director Francesco Rossi. This is a REAL movie, not a stage production. It was filmed at various locations in Spain, and has a gritty quality that befits its story. The singing is glorious. Julia Mangenes, who has a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice and acts up and dances a storm, is a sultry, teasing, explosive Carmen, who most men could not resist. The great Placido Domingo, a bit old for Don Jose but nevertheless totally believable, was in top form, singing with great emotion with his pure, perfectly focused voice. This isn't a movie just for opera lovers. It's a movie for movie lovers.
