"Accomplished neurosurgeon Beatrice Trovato knows that her deep empathy for her patients is starting to impede her work. So when her beloved brother passes away, she welcomes the unexpected trip to the Tuscan city of Siena to resolve his estate, even as she wrestles with grief. But as she delves deeper into her brother's affairs, she discovers intrigue she never imagined--a 700-year-old conspiracy to decimate the city. After uncovering the journal and paintings of Gabriele Accorsi, the fourteenth-century artist at the heart of the plot, Beatrice finds a startling image of her own face and is suddenly transported to the year 1347. She awakens in a Siena unfamiliar to her, one that will soon be hit by the Plague. Yet when Beatrice meets Accorsi, something unexpected happens: she falls in love--not only with Gabriele, but also with the beauty and cadence of medieval life. As the Plague and the ruthless hands behind its trajectory threaten not only her survival but also Siena's very existence, Beatrice must decide in which century she belongs."-- Provided by publisher.

p 338 and elsewhere in the book indicates a unique time travel portal than most books I've read. "The person is the portal, not the place." Having traveled to Italy, this book makes a lot more sense in how a city is laid out and stays the same over hundreds of years than if I had not traveled there. If you need an excuse to travel, here is one.

Love and mystery await the reader in this intriguing time-travel novel about Beatrice Trovato, a skilled neurosurgeon, living in present day New York City. After her brother's untimely death, Beatrice travels to Siena to settle his estate. She is pulled into his research about the Bubonic Plague and it is here amongst the 670 year-old letters, journals and hand-painted frescoes that she time travels to the year 1347; just months before the Black Death. Great escapism.

Anyone who has experienced the mystique of Siena, and her art and history, will enjoy reading Winower's fanciful novel. Siena is a city steeped in its traditions and the beauty and romance of its past, a city where one can step into the past by merely breathing, and this author - supported by a lot of strong historical detail - asks us to watch a woman do just that.

Whether, you're looking for intrigue, time-travel or romance, this book has it all. I loved it!

I really began to enjoy this creatively written novel when Beatrice travelled to Siena, and then was tossed back in time to medieval Italy. The pages took me on the journey along with Beatrice as her life evolved into a heart-warming, delightful love story filled with suspense, intrigue and surprises, and interesting characterizations.

This is getting some comparison to Outlander and while certain plot points do echo Gabaldon's book (woman with medical training travels through time, finds romance, and obstacles to survival) I believe the similarities end there. The Scribe of Siena is an enjoyable read but without the passion - both romantic and violent - that made Outlander memorable. But if you like a gentler read this might be a time-travel romance for you.

Suspense, time travel, intrigue, and romance - this debut has it all. Although I enjoyed traveling back to 14th century Siena with Beatrice, too much of the storyline hinged on the paranormal, chance, and fate for my taste.
