I am a huge fan of Alice Hoffman's work but this novel left me wanting. It felt a bit predictable (something I have never said about any of her books!) and the main character hard to cheer for. A good enough read but not what I have come to expect from this incredibly gifted storyteller.

I really had to push myself on the first 20 pages or so of this book -- the protagonist is at her lowest emotional point at the beginning, and it was depressing to read. However, I kept reading, and I'm glad I did -- Faithful was a good read. I appreciated how the novel showed Shelby's gradual journey towards rebuilding her life (in spite of herself) over time after a tragic accident puts her best friend in a coma.

Shelby and her best friend are in a car accident and her friend dies. She blames herself and goes through years of guilt. She can never forgive herself and lives on the edge of society. She meets a guy and lives with him for years but is never really in love.
Someone is leaving her messages over the years and eventually she discovers it is a high school admirer who is looking out for her.
She eventually comes to terms with the friends death, reconnects with family, falls in love with highschool friend, starts her own dog business.

To me this book was a heart twister about the painful (and rewarding!) journey of re-discovering one's self, hope, love and happiness. Very well written and highly enjoyable leaving the reader with a soothing and uplifting feeling (even though it's out of my usual go-to genre)! It kept me wanting to know what happens next, all through the reading.

Alice Hoffman novels are quicksand for me. In Faithful the postcards, bread crumbs, leading us on.

The narrative of the story may be YA but the theme is universal - to love and be loved. Alice Hoffman developed a young character who was devastated by loss and tragedy looking for redemption. She expresses, through the main character, a mirror of how our outlook on life parallels our internal view of self. Shelby feels abandonment and loneliness like dogs and cats at an animal shelter. (She adopts/steals several). I feel the author intended for the reader to deepen our own understanding with relationship to self as we experience the events in Shelby's life.

I had a hard time getting into this one and was not going to finish it. However, when I looked at the last few pages, I was intrigued and did end up finishing it. I agree it could have been a YA novel and that the ending was way too cliched, but I always like a happy ending!

Wow, Alice Hoffman’s best book to date. I loved reading about a teen who thinks she’s nobody quietly evolve into a person with depth, compassion and knowledge, despite her never really thinking she’s somebody. If I were to use a adjective to describe this book I’d say “heartfelt”, although I still think Shelby was crazy to “rescue” the dogs and the cat and she was a person I probably would have ignored if possible. Shelby makes me stop and think about how a person’s appearance really has nothing to do with the size of their heart.

Very much enjoyed reading about this young person's journey with living with guilt. It's happened to all of us in varying degrees, and learning to live with and move beyond an emotionally crippling ordeal takes some people a lifetime to overcome. Shelby acts out in varying ways and we all sigh a breath of relief when she comes into her own, rather sooner than later, and in a much more positive way than most. Yes, it could be for younger readers, but the themes are mature and many an adult does not reach the depth of healing that Shelby does as a young adult, and older people can find nuggets of wisdom within.
