The information based on letters is very engaging. However, the writing style is simplistic and repetitive. The book is obviously well researched. This is really a book for adults because of explicit sexual matters including prostitution and sexually-transmitted disease. I do recommend the book for those interested in Vincent Van Gogh and Impressionism.

The art at the beginning of each chapter is excellent and illuminates the content.

A Great Books for Great Kids pick. This nonfiction book follows the artist Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo. Based on the letters written between the two brothers, this story will appeal to artists and history fans in grades 7 and up.

This AMAZING story of unconditional love surprised me on so many levels! As a lover of Van Gogh’s art and someone who has read a lot about him, I was blown away by the stories I didn’t know and the ones I’d gotten wrong. You don't have to love post-impressionist art or even know who the Van Goghs were to appreciate the beauty and complexity of their relationship. Deborah Heiligman weaves together the triumphant and devastating events of Vincent and Theo’s lives with the intensely emotional words of their most intimate letters to create a masterpiece! Winner of the 2018 YALSA Award for non-fiction, she once again reminds us that fact is stranger (and sometimes SO much sweeter) than fiction.

This is such a page-turning book, yet filled with [some] melancholy! I love this book so much; it is like you're living in 2 legendary Painter brothers' lives through a tragedy. Many ups and down throughout the book. I'd recommend this to everyone (ages 11-13+) who would enjoy reading a biography of 2 famous, yet astonishing Painters.

Although the simplicity of the text bothered me, it was probably chosen on purpose to match Vincent van Gogh’s painting style. It’s well research and the reader finished knowing a great deal more about the deep friendship between Vincent and his brother, Theo.

Very thorough look at the relationship between Vincent Van Gogh and his younger brother Theo. I learned so much about Vincent's art, his life, and how significant Theo's support was (emotionally, professionally, and financially). Direct quotes from letters between the brothers and the author's use of detail really helped transport me back in time. Some parts dragged for me a bit, due to the sheer amount of information, but overall, the book was very engaging.
