Released in 1966 - Pet Sounds would be the 11th studio album recorded by American rock band the Beach Boys.

Originally promoted as "the most progressive pop album ever" - Pet Sounds attracted recognition for its ambitious recording and unusually sophisticated music, and is widely considered to be one of the most influential albums in music history.

The album was produced and arranged by Brian Wilson, who also wrote and composed almost all of its music.

Wilson's goal was to create "the greatest rock album ever made" - a personalized work with no filler tracks. It is sometimes considered a Wilson solo album, repeating the themes and ideas he had introduced with The Beach Boys Today! one year earlier.

Pet Sounds contains 16 songs in all (3 of which are bonus tracks). Two of my faves here are - "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Sloop John B".

"Pet Sounds" you might be the best rock and roll record ever recorded. KCLS patron reviews indicate it as an essential rock record of all time. There are so many great songs that future rock groups will dig out and make hits of them again and again! Brian Wilson you are a genius and the world appreciates you legacy in music!

One of the greatest pop album ever recorded. The stereo mix will blow your mind. This is not surf music. Brian Wilson at his best. A must listen

Classic album by the Beach Boys.

First the shock of realizing I first heard these songs half a century ago! -- first in mono (on a small transistor radio tuned to CFUN Vancouver), then in stereo (thanks to my sister's friend who owned a record player that played in this amazing thing called stereo). This set of discs gives you everything: mono, stereo, instrumental and live recordings, and brought back many memories. I love some of these songs, but harder perhaps now to listen to them in the same way when you know some of the troubled & sad times for the Beach Boys, especially the brilliant Brian Wilson. Still this is a ground breaking album...recommend it whether it brings back many memories or is brand-new to you.

Pet Sounds was recorded in late 1965 and early 1966, about a year after Brian Wilson had withdrawn from playing live with The Beach Boys in order to concentrate on composing and studio work. While the rest of the band were out on tour, Brian Wilson worked in the studio creating multi-layered compositions with painstaking attention to detail utilizing orchestration, sound effects and unusual instruments. When the band returned from tour they went into the studio to add their trademark complex vocal harmonies.
The new direction of the music caused some consternation within the group. The US press didn't know what to make of the album at first, although it later became acknowledged as both important and influential. In the UK the album was immediately acclaimed and commercially successful, peaking at No.2 in the albums chart and remaining in the Top 10 for 6 months. Pet Sounds is now universally regarded as one of the finest albums of the sixties.
Cuts from many of the Pet Sounds album tracks including God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B, I Know There's An Answer, Let's Go Away For A While and I Just Wasn't Made For These Times.

The tunes on this CD tend to be sadder and heartbroken. Although there is 76 minutes of music on this disk it consists of 12 tunes in monaural and then the same 12 tunes (plus a bonus track) in stereo. The package includes a 20-page liner note.

Listening to this is like eating a box of doughnuts. Saccharine gluttony.

This highly-influential, psychedelic pop album from 1966 is The Beach Boys and their distinctive California/Surfer sound at its very best.

Featuring such memorable tunes as "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Sloop John B", Pet Sounds is The Beach Boys in their early days when they were actually considered "boys".

I bought Pet Sounds in 1966 and it knocked me out. This wasn't the great follow-up album to a maturing Beach Boys progression of music, it was a quantum leap of music and lyrics that spoke to me. It was overlooked because there was a lot of competition and many great songs then, especially from the Beatles. Pet Sounds makes my top 10 album list, and it remaims my favorite album.
