Gender fluid Sallot Lean is a thief who wants nothing more than to escape the drudgery of life as a highway robber and get closer to the upper-class, and the nobles who destroyed their home. Sal auditions to become a member of The Left Hand, the Queen's personal assassins, named after the rings she wears, in order to infiltrate the court and get revenge. But the audition is a fight to the death filled with clever circus acrobats, lethal apothecaries, and vicious ex-soldiers. A childhood as a common criminal hardly prepared Sal for the trials. And as Sal succeeds in the competition, and wins the heart of Elise, an intriguing scribe at court, they start to dream of a new life and a different future, but one that Sal can have only if they survive.

Mask of Shadows is the first in a series that is great for any fantasy lovers. Living in a post-magical world, the characters in this book must make due with arrows, daggers, and shields to do their dirty work. While it hit all my personal sweet-spots for the traditional assassin competition plot line, this novel’s main character, Sal, was the most intriguing part. Sal is a gender fluid thief who enters the competition for a chance at revenge. Having a gender fluid character in a fantasy setting is a very welcome change to the traditional narrative and allows for greater diversity within the rest of the book. Highly recommended for those looking for more LGBT representation within the sci-fi/fantasy genre and in YA at large.

If you are a fan of Leigh Bardugo and Sarah J. Maas, then Mask of Shadows by Linsey Miller would be a great book for you! I love that the main character is gender fluid and the fact that this book is about becoming one of the Queen's personal assassins. This is a great start to a new fantasy series.
