Chantel, an underfed orphan living within a walled city run by the Patriarchs, learns only the most basic magic at Miss Ellicott's School. When her snake 'familiar' crawls into her ear, and with the help of an outsider and fellow students, Chantel's powers and self-awareness grow, eventually helping her rise to save the city she loves. Great magical feats, funny banter, and snarky commentary on the ridiculous aspects of being bound to a dragon in a city that runs on sexism and xenophobia make this a witty and exciting middle-grade read from the author of Jinx. Clean fantasy; doesn't belong in the Teen section. Only complaint: the map provided does NOT show Dimswitch, a location in the story where much of the late action occurs. This was a poor editorial error.

The title is somewhat misleading as it makes this sound like a Harry Potter-esque story about studying magic. It is a little about that, but it's more about power, doing what's right, and a 13-year-old girl who has to use her burgeoning magic to save her city (with the help of a dragon that just popped out of her head).
