In the 1640s during the English Civil War, the twelve-year-old illegitimate daughter of an aristocratic family shares their unique hereditary gift: the capacity to be possessed by ghosts.
I can see why this was nominated for a Hugo. With a brilliant plot, wonderful characters, and a world of heart, this is a tale worth reading again and worth recommending to others.

"If someone throws aside their pride and begs with all their heart, and if they do so in vain, then they are never quite the same person afterwards. Something in them dies, and something else comes to life."

"It is a blow to my vanity to consider the possibility that I am nothing but a bundle of thoughts, feelings, and memories, given life by somebody else's mind. But then again, so is a book."

Add a CommentI’d like to read more by Frances Hardinge- The Lie Tree has been on my TBR list for ages! I liked this one very much. It was fairly fast-paced and kept my interest. It was spooky, but not scary. If you liked the Diviners by Libba Bray, you'll probably like this one too.
Geniously crafted... as all of Hardinge's books are.
