Released in 1944. IMDB has some great trivia comments, especially this:

"The film drew some criticism for its lesbian undertones in the Miss Holloway character, played by Cornelia Otis Skinner.

A letter written in 1944 by Father Brendan Larnen of the Catholic Legion of Decency to Will Hays, Hollywood's head censor, said:

'large audiences of questionable type attended this film at unusual hours drawn by certain erotic and esoteric elements in the film.'

The letter warned to guard against such subject matter on the screen in the future."

A subtle movie with a lot of things only hinted at because of the time period. I enjoyed it.

If you're looking to be frightened, you might be disappointed. As a neat mystery that the characters try to solve and as a nice look at a place and time (Cornwall in 1937), it succeeds. The book has many more characters and sub-plots and some points have been compressed but it's a fun movie. One change that improves the movie is some clever quips the screenwriters gave to the character of Rick (Roddy in the novel.) Even though you will know a key plot point after seeing this, try the book for more of the same. And reading it with the actors in mind helps since they were all well cast.

This movie doesn't have any set-piece Hollywood SCARES in it, but what you imagine is far scarier than anything you could possibly see on the screen. If you have a working imagination, that is.

Old movie, black and white, and I absolutely loved it! If you like old classic type movies take a chance on it.

This is one of the first "serious" ghost movies, prior to 1945 ghost were part comedy or swindler only. This was an amazing movie for its day! Still keeps an audience now. Even the comentary are worth a listen.

This drama/mystery film will definitely leave you on the edge of your seat as it has a storyline with many twists and turns. The movie is about a girl named Anna who returns home from her stay in a psychiatric ward, to discover that her father has married the nurse of her late mother. One night, the ghost of her mother appears and claims that the nurse is the one that killed her. Anna decides to investigate this, but at what risk? The movie did have some awkward scenes and some mildly sloppy directing, but what it did do is create a plot that was far more interesting than some plots in other horror films. I would rate this movie 3/5 stars.

I wish Sno-Isle would get their head out of their attic and put down the year these movies are made. Not sure if it's laziness or they just don't care. They say the date in the title is when it was made into DVD but that makes sense to put that date in the title. It just makes me have to go into extensive research to find out when the movie was made. Tomfoolery is what I call it and I am sick to death of getting movies that are not what they seem. Free or not, it's a waste of my time.

I think if people are looking for horror and gore this is not the movie for them. After all we need to realize this was made back in the day when we didn't see anyone be literally shot on the screen. There was no body parts being cut off before our eyes, no swearing, no people seen in bed... that kind of a thing. As far as the movie being scary, I think it's more about romance than anything else and I appreciated the movie. Innocence... nothing wrong with that, and some parts were comedic.

This pathetic attempt at horror was filmed in 1944 - a time when a few wisps of smoke and pages of a book turning on their own were meant to be scary.
