At first, I was worried that protagonist, Mallory Shepard would be one of those unfortunately all-too-common dysfunctional female cozy mystery protagonists. However, I was pleasantly surprised to be completely wrong. Mallory quickly showed herself to be quick-witted, assertive, and likeable. Yes, she has some unhappy moments, but that made the character seem more real.

I also liked the supporting cast of characters. Surprisingly, I also appreciated the romantic elements, largely because Blackmoore remembered that this is a mystery story.

On that note, the mystery moved along well overall. There were a couple areas that were a bit repetitive, but that type of awkwardness is common in first books in a new series, so also quite forgivable, especially as thy were minor.

I will definitely look up book 2 in this series.
