I am not a knitter, but after reading Ann Hood's An Italian Wife, I wanted to keep reading her books. The knitting Circle encompasses the hurts and the joys of life and how we are all tied together in this journey -a remarkable book.

I am a knitter. The camaraderie of a knitting circle is indeed very comforting, reflective and meditative. Many things can be solved while you knit. This book and its characters are no exception. I loved this story and felt a part of the knitting circle listening in as life happens.

After Mary Baxter loses her five-year-old daughter and only child to meningitis, she is barely able to do more than exist. At her mother's urging, Mary joins a knitting circle as a way to work through her loss. As the other women in the circle begin to enfold her in acceptance, expecting nothing in return, Mary hears their own stories of loss. Their acceptance and their stories eventually lead Mary to a place of being able to hope in life again.

I loved this book. Mary's journey rings true. She suffers and grieves in ways and for a time that seem very realistic, yet the book never sinks into such despair that the reader is worn out. The Knitting Circle also is a testament to the power of female friendships to bring support and healing - and it showcases Ann Hood's considerable writing talent.
