Horrible History of Medicine

When it comes to the science of medicine, there is much to be grateful for. Vaccines, blood typing, x-rays, antibiotics - all make huge differences in how we are treated for accidents and ailments. For those of us who are perhaps morbidly curious, or at least not terribly squeamish, exploring the history of medicine is fascinating.   However, it’s not a pretty picture, ranging from the… (more)

Here is another book with a seriously misleading title. There are any number of topics that one would expect to be addressed but are not: the circulatory system and associated ailments, the science and business of blood testing including the rise and collapse of Theranos, and the use in emergency medicine of the new anti-clotting compounds that have greatly improved the survivability of accident victims and battle casualties. It does cover blood banks and donation but not broadly or really deeply though at length. But if you want to know about the peculiar HIV situation in South Africa, or feminine hygiene in India, or the medical uses of leaches then this is your book.

The writing style is also weird. Present tense may be used for events that occurred over 50 years ago and not witnessed by the author or past tense as it seems to move the author. Also, the book contains numerous incomplete sentences and sudden topic changes.

Disappointing book. As a long time blood donor, I was hoping the book would provide a complete story. The subtitle, “A journey through the money, medicine and mysteries of blood,” was quite promising. Unfortunately, the book seems to be cobbled together from a number of previously published articles, not well connected and only vaguely related to blood. At least two thirds of the book is filled with long stories about AIDS in South Africa, girls menstruating in Nepal, menstrual pads in Asia, leeches in medical history, complete with strong political opinions of the author. Not my cup of tea, and definitely not my pint of blood.
