In Mary Queen of Scots, John Guy creates an intimate and absorbing portrait of one of history’s most famous women, depicting her world and her place in the sweep of history with stunning immediacy. Bringing together all surviving documents and uncovering a trove of new sources for the first time, Guy dispels the popular image of Mary Stuart as a romantic leading lady—achieving her ends through feminine wiles—and establishes her as the intellectual and political equal of Elizabeth I. Through Guy’s pioneering research and superbly readable prose, we come to see Mary as a skillful diplomat, maneuvering ingeniously among a dizzying array of factions that sought to control or dethrone her. It is an enthralling, myth-shattering look at a complex woman and ruler and her time. -- Amazon.com.

From Library Staff

A new historian of Mary Queen of Scots draws on new sources to shatter various myths surrounding this odd monarch and uncover some of the scandals and political machinations underpinning, and undermining, her throne.

A fresh look at Scotland's last, doomed queen explores the mysteries surrounding her life and shows that rather than being a woman ruled mostly by sentiment, she was indeed a gifted diplomat.

Wonderfully written account of Mary Stuarts life. Reads like a novel with author Guy giving everyone their say in a real attempt to hear from all sides. Even the other seems to swing from liking Mary to loving her and then to realize that it was all in her own folly with the men in her life. Not a happy life but a fascinating one to read. Highly recommended.

A fascinating and thorough account of Mary Stuart's life and death. Reality is better than a soap opera.
