It's science fiction, of course. Science: Some interesting scientific information about the sun- though it is relatively modest by stellar standards, it's kind of important to us and has the potential to wallop us from time to time. Fiction: Interesting story lines about how people respond in times of crisis- some rise to the moment, some sink into the pit. Some good characters and dialog, with interesting thoughts about what the ruling political classes might already have in place, to ensure that they survive as the rulers in the event a "continuity of government" cataclysm should occur.

Together, these elements make an entertaining (if entertainment can come from such dark matter) read about a hypothetical future. I'm comforted that God has already told us what the future holds through the end times prophecies in the Bible (some elements in this book fit with the Biblical prophecies, but it's not a complete allegory for what's going to happen).

Read it for the entertainment. It might encourage you to prepare your family for potential disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, civil insurrections and EMPs. It might make you ponder whether elected officials are more focused on taking care of themselves or their citizens. And lastly, it might make you curious about what the Biblical prophecies say.
